Who applies for truck financing
Who applies? Owner-operators adding a first commercial vehicle, fleets replacing units on a cycle, contractors who need a dump truck for a season that has already started, and municipal or service businesses running vocational bodies. Both commercial truck leasing structures are available: a $1-buyout lease, where you take title at term and depreciate the truck through capital cost allowance, or an operating lease, where payments can be deducted as an operating expense and a $1 buyout at term-end turns rental into ownership. Which wins depends on how long you keep your units and how your accountant treats the fleet.
New and used trucks
New and used trucks both qualify. On used units the lender looks at age, mileage and maintenance records, and a clean service history genuinely changes what can be advanced. We also finance the truck as it goes to work, not as it left the factory: a chassis plus a crane, a reefer body or a plow package can be wrapped into one contract instead of a lease for the truck and a scramble for the upfit.
How the application works
The application is our standard three steps: identification, owner information, then the vehicle, with the VIN, spec sheet or dealer quote. Application-only decisions cover most single-unit purchases; above $250,000, financial statements support the file, which matters for multi-unit or heavy vocational purchases. On approval we pay the dealer or private seller directly, and the lender’s security interest is registered against the vehicle under the PPSA or RDPRM and discharged when the contract ends. Seasonal payment schedules are available for businesses whose trucking revenue follows a season, such as construction hauling and snow operations.
Where the other vehicle files belong
Alternatives worth naming: a semi truck or highway tractor belongs on our semi-truck financing page, where the underwriting differs; trailers have their own page; and a general bank line pins your operating credit to a depreciating vehicle. For commercial vehicle financing built around what the truck actually earns, send the application with the unit you have in mind. On approval the vendor is paid directly and you take delivery.
